I really enjoyed the Real Men Cook event on Father’s Day 2012. Yvette Moyo with a crew led by Mary Green Promotions put on a great event, despite the unforgiving heat. Sampled tasty foods prepared by some admirable and talented Black men/fathers. Especially enjoyed the culinary delights prepared by the men at the NBC sponsored stations. Of course, NBC’s charming Deborah Brown was on hand to greet folks. Was impressed with the Kroc Community Center and it’s gorgeous swimming pool, which had its grand opening the preceding day. And, of course, in addition to enjoying some wonderful peach cobbler (NBC!) and superb banana pudding ice cream (Shawn Michelle’s Gourmet Pantry), saxophonist extraordinaire Kirk Whalum provided delectable ear candy desert. To my delight, he greeted me warmly like a long-lost friend, and I am certainly a long-time admirer. I interviewed Kirk numerous times and often featured him in EBONY’s music column. And the Grammy Award-winning artist is a Memphis Brother who has never forgotten his roots and continues to give back to his community. Great Concert, Kirk!
